license vs. saas

To hear some people tell it, SaaS is the best thing since sliced bread. But it’s not the right fit for every situation. Ask yourself questions like: Does the software require a real-time connection to a data source? How long you plan to keep the software? Do you want to capitalize the cost or pay for it as a regular expense? Do you want to be responsible for IT and infrastructure? With your situation in mind, which option is right for your company: License or Saas? Use the example below as a guide to your decision.

The temptation by many managers is to purchase a license, but typically SaaS will be more cost-effective, as the chart above shows. And remember, even when you think you are purchasing software, you aren’t. As with SaaS, with a license you are really just purchasing the right to use the software.


  • We were looking for a tool that would help us make better decisions that in turn would improve performance. In addition to having to fit with our company culture, another thing we wanted in our tracking system was flexibility.
